Pastor’s Pondering – April 26, 2017

Here is a poem I wrote on what was nearly the shortest day of the year.
As our daylight now exceeds the dark, let’s all stretch our spirits as well as
our legs, and pray for healing and shalom in the world as well as our bodies.

There are some cold dark days

In December when I understand

That faithfulness is not enough-

That night will come no matter

What I have done that day,

That red ribbon and sparking lights

Cannot undo a thing that did not go well.

Well, there is no second verse-

I go on, trying to perfect a manner

That cannot succeed except in its own diligence,

Praying that my practice

May be a small candle in the long night,

Knowing that my stubbornness is a small shadow

Of true faithfulness,

Hoping for nothing

Other than the grace of God-

Which, after all,

Is all we truly have.
