Pastor’s Pondering 04/08/2020

“Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume. She poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” -John 12:3

Who knows where she

found the nard,

Let alone the money to pay for it.

And surely she herself

had no need for it.

But the fact that she found it,

and bought it, is testimony

to more than extravagance,

more than devotion,

more than persistence.

Pure and simple,

It was love of the rarest kind.

And as for me, well,

I’ll offer my voice loud

in a song I know.

Or hesitant,

In a song I’m learning.

I’ll offer a hastily scribbled poem,

or a sermon composed in a late-night stupor,

or a smile dutifully offered

to someone I’d just as soon pass by.

But really, all I can offer

however imperfect,

however prescribed by duty,

however thrown off in a hurry towards somewhere else,

It’s not what she did,

but it is an offering

of my dirty feet,

for an anointing

by his grace.
