(Upon seeing a yellow-bellied sapsucker)
To the Woodpecker in the maple,
Blessings to you, may you feast
Upon whatever you find,
May you find whatever you need.
When the time comes,
We pray you will find safe journey
To your home in the mountains,
Safe place to lay eggs and raise young,
Live long and even prosper.
We covet your prayers for us,
Kind bird, that we may rejoice
To see your flash of color next winter,
That we may wisely leave
Place for you to shelter,
That we too may safely raise our young,
Celebrate our world,
And prosper in diversity
Among all that God has given.
Until we meet again,
Peace, and good pecking.
